Andi Hajramurni.THE JAKARTA POST/MAKASSAR The partnership system requires Panin Peduli to provide seedlings while its partners do the planting and maintenance. Panin Bank also provides them with the necessary training. To date. Panin Peduli has distributed more than five million seedlings to partners. "We have prepared seven million seedlings and poly bags, and up to this moment we have a balance of about 1.5 million seedlings. Our target is to distribute 10 million seedlings, so even if only half grows into trees we feel that we have contributed to the countrys re-greening program and thereby reduced the impact of global warming." said Onny. The most active partners of Panin Peduli are Brigif Linud 3 Kostrad, Kodam Vll/Wirabuana, Kodam VI/ Tanjung Pura, Kodam V/Brawijaya, Bosowa Foundation and Sam Ratulangi University in Manado. Kodam Vll/Wirabuana alone has received one million seedlings. Panin Peduli is also working together with the administration of South Sulawesi province to plant seedlings in about 2,000 schools via the South Sulawesi Go Green program launched this year. Bank Panin has chosen schools because it believes that environmental awareness can be nurtured in children from an early age. There are currently 600 schools actively participating in the program. South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo said Bank Panins regreening program helped the administration immensely because it needed the participation and sup-port of everyone, including private companies and the public. "What Pak Onny and Panin Bank have done is of great help to us as a green environment is everybodys responsibility. Panin has given us a useful lesson that in fact going green, like planting trees and the like can be done by anyone at little cost. And today we are enjoying the benefits as some of the streets in Makassar are lush and shady thanks to Pak Onnys trees," said Syahrul. The South Sulawesi provincial administration has launched an environment preservation program called South Sulawesi Go Green. Syahrul said the administration had prepared about 2.5 million seedlings. However, he said the program was difficult to realize. "We are used to implementing through programs and projects, so I think this sincere approach will take time and will be done gradually." He said. Panin Peduli’s regreening program not only restores the environment, but it is also profitable since the seedlings produced can be sold to other parties, as Brigif Linud 3 Kostrad does. Brigif Linud 3 Kostrad plants some of the seedlings produced at its headquarters in Kariango, Maros regency. South Sulawesi, and sells the rest to neighboring residents or companies, such as PT Semen Tonasa. The income from the sales is given to the army unit and the soldiers who cultivated the seedlings. "Honestly, this program has a lot of benefits. Our headquarters are now lush and green. We also have lots of water sources. Previouslyduring the dry season, the lake and wells here would dry up. Now, for a year or so, the situation has reversed. Now we have plenty of water. Soldiers are also making extra income. All in all. Panin Peduli is a very beneficial and profitable program," said Col. Doni Munardo, who was in command of Brigif Linud 3 Kostrad when the partnership with Panin Bank started. Meanwhile, several private companies are cultivating seedlings for their own needs, such as Parangloe Warehousing Center ear the Makassar toll road. This company, which is located on a 330-hectare plot, requires hundreds of thousands of seedlings to make its warehousing, industry and residential zones green. Bosowa Foundation cultivates seedlings in Tanjung Bunga, Makassar. Panin and Bosowa forged an agreement on making the project open to others who want to learn how to cultivate seedlings. "One has to check the condition of the location where a tree is to be planted, and the type of tree should be suitable to the condition. Therefore, we have decided to make the Bosowa Foundation location a place to learn about seedling cultivation, etc," said Onny. Panin Peduli has chosen rain tree seedlings because this type of tree grows easily and is hardy. Rain trees are also lush with leaves that can be made into compost once they are shed. However, Panin Peduli is preparing other types of seedlings, such as tamarind and mahogany, as well as trees native to Sulawesi, like the fci tree (Vitex cofassus) tree. |
